Re:Nylon

Prada has always employed nylon as its primary material. The debut of the brand's '84 collection of Pocone nylon in its bags and accessory line earned an international acclaim. Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her own label and Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, hypebeast-ready diffusion line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The Milan-based powerhouse has transformed its iconic nylon bags into eco-friendly recycled nylon fabrics. The new collection includes six classic designs - a belt bag (pictured), shoulder bag (pictured) and a tote bag (pictured) as well as duffle bag (pictured), and two backpacks - in repurposed ECONYL fabrics made from recycled plastics and fishing nets.

The repurposed fabric is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn manufacturer which produces Econyl fabric out of recycled nylon waste that can be recycled repeatedly without losing its quality. It's part a larger initiative to transition from virgin nylon to re:Nylon across the entire Prada portfolio by 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. The collection includes six new Re:Nylon handbags and a pair of ECONYL shoes and boots, and a line of apparel made of the same fabric.

Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", the video series that showcases the unique process used to create the Re:Nylon bags. The first video includes Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic Explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility that turns old nylon into recycled ECONYL.

With the transition to re:Nylon, Prada is undergoing its biggest reduction in the use of virgin nylon to date, resulting in the reduction of 70 000 barrels of oil every year, The Business of Fashion reports. The move will also cut the carbon emissions of the company by around 57,000 tonnes. The label has recently gone fur-free on its clothing and accessories. This is the most recent sustainability initiative.

Recycled nylon

Although it's better for the environment than nylon, recycled nylon has its drawbacks. It's not biodegradable. It will remain in oceans or landfills until it is broken into smaller particles that can cause harm to wildlife. The fabric is also non-breathable and may shed microplastics when washed. It also consumes 50% less energy to produce as compared to regular nylon and is more durable than other bags like cotton or wool.

The fabric is constructed from the waste plastic and petroleum that is made by burning fossil fuels. This helps reduce the need for more natural resources and the carbon emissions from the production of virgin nylon. It is also much easier than other bag materials to handle, as it does not need to be dyed or weaved. This makes it an ideal option for bags that will be used often for gym or yoga gear.

In addition to its environmental benefits in addition to its environmental benefits, recycled nylon is a stronger and more flexible fabric than conventional cotton or polyester. It's also able stand up to a lot of abuse and is therefore ideal for backpacks and other outdoor gear. It is light and is easily cut and stitched into the shape you want for the backpack. Nylon is also a good choice for outdoor gear as it is water resistant and doesn't absorb odors or mildew as easily as other fabrics.

If you are looking for a bag that is environmentally sustainable, look for Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certification.  onlinedesignerhandbags  is a test for chemical residues as also social and environmental responsibility. This certification is a good indicator of brands that are honest and responsible.

Patagonia for instance, has a variety of yoga equipment and backpacks that are made of recycled nylon, which is known as Econyl. The nylon is produced using a closed-loop method that uses 50 percent less energy than virgin nylon. In addition, the brand is a partner with organizations that are working to protect our planet.
